Darren
was born in Brighton on a cold January morning in
1968. ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ was number
one in the album charts and Jeff Lynne was already
thinking about his Electric Light Orchestra idea.
Darren’s musical journey had begun! Influenced
by his parents’ record collection and his
cousin’s eagerness for him to experience the
sounds of Genesis, Bowie, ELO and the Beatles, Darren
decided to save his school dinner money and buy
a guitar. He soon started writing his own songs
and spent most of his school and college days in
various rock bands either touring or in recording
studios. In 1988, his band After All, released a
single that reached the dizzy heights of 108 in
the charts! After being turned down by most major
record labels, the band received a letter from Chrysalis
Records asking for further material. Nothing happened!
In
1991 Darren decided to take his songwriting skills
in a different direction and formed his own Theatre
Company. Within five years he had written the musicals
‘The Garden Plot’, ‘Out For The
Count’, ‘Slick’, ‘The Children
Of Winter’, The Ivory Forest’ and ‘When
Saturday Comes’. Finally in 1997, Darren had
a chance to have his musical ‘A Ring Of Roses’
performed in the West End courtesy of producers
Ray Jones and Adam Kenwright.
‘A Ring Of Roses’ received excellent
reviews from its Savoy Theatre performance and was
followed by the musicals ‘Seize The Day’,
‘Their Scarves Were Red’, ‘The
Legend Of Noble Noris’ and ‘Jonah And
The Whale’. Darren is still performing in
his band After All. He is still writing musicals
and somehow, he still finds time to be Headteacher
of Langney Primary School.
